Filipino caster Aldrin Paulo "Dunoo" Pangan, one half of the casting duo behind Dota 2's iconic 'Lakad Matatag, Normalin Normalin' voice line, has died after contracting the coronavirus.
In a post on his Facebook page on 9 August, Dunoo revealed that he contracted the coronavirus. He then continued posting updates regarding his condition in the days that followed, with his last update being posted on 17 August.
On Friday (27 August), many of Dunoo's coworkers — including his longtime casting partner Marlon "Lon" Marcelo — as well as other members of the esports community in the Philippines, confirmed his passing.
While Dunoo has long been a stalwart of the esports scene in the Philippines, he gained international renown after clips of him and Lon going crazy during the ending to an intense game between Team Secret and Fnatic in ESL One Katowice 2018 went viral.
Many of Lon and Dunoo's lines during that shoutcast have since been immortalized in the history of Dota 2 both as beloved memes within the community and as in-game voice lines, including their iconic 'Lakad Matatag, Normalin Normalin' and 'Easiest Money of my Life!' lines.
Members of the Dota 2 community in the Philippines and the rest of the world have made public statements expressing their grief over Dunoo's passing.
Filipino caster John "johnxfire" Hernandez said in a post on Twitter that Dunoo was "an icon in Filipino casting" and that "his passing is a great loss to everyone."
"Dunoo's voice and call outs will always ring true to Dota fans everywhere, and his passing is a great loss for everyone. Boss Dunoo was one of the first casters I ever worked with on location - it was awe-inspiring to be seated next to a legend like him, and I will always remember the friendliness and help he handed off to me back then. I'll miss you Boss D," added johnxfire.
Beyond the Summit founder and renown Dota 2 caster David "Godz" Parker remembered Dunoo as "a genuinely kind, amazing friend over the years" in a post on Twitter.
"[Dunoo] welcomed me to Manila every time I visited like a brother. Just sadness," said Godz.
Many esports organisations competing in Dota 2, including TNC Predator Team Secret, have also taken to Twitter to express their grief over Dunoo's passing.
It is with a heavy heart that we inform everyone about the passing of one of our beloved shoutcasters. Aldrin "Dunoo" Pangan's legacy will forever be immortalized in the halls of esports history.
