President Rodrigo Duterte
QUEZON CITY, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte stressed on Thursday (September 14) that he is not interested in putting Senator Antonio Trillanes IV behind bars.
He added that even the military does not have the interest to arrest the senator.
“I do not have the interest. He can stay there as a boarder,” the President said referring to Trillanes who has been holed up inside his office in Senate for almost two weeks now to avoid possible arrest.
The President added that his order to the military and the police not to arrest Trillanes remains until “there is a warrant of arrest by the court.”
“Wala man ang military. It has not constituted the martial law court. So it’s only the civilian court. Wala namang order. So kung walang order, huwag ninyong pakialaman,” the President said.
Senator Trillanes is on his eleventh day inside the Senate premises after the release of Proclamation 572 voiding the amnesty granted to him by then President Benigno Aquino III.
His fate now depends on the decision of the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 148 on whether or not it would issue an alias warrant of arrest and a hold departure order against the senator as requested by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Meanwhile, the President said he will let the military and police act on intelligence reports about an ouster plot that some opposition groups are allegedly brewing against him.
“I was elected by the people. I’m not a squatter there. So eventually the military and the police will have to face the crisis, the dilemma. Now, what happens next is anybody’s — your guess is as good as mine,” he concluded. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
