CAGAYAN VALLEY, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte is confident that communist rebellion in the country will soon come to an end.
Duterte said the Filipino people are finally “winning the war” as the communist fronts in Mindanao have already collapsed.
According to him, with the growing number of rebel surrenderees who also turned in their weapons for decommissioning, the decade-long insurgency in the country is likely to end next year.
“I think that kung maawa ang Panginoong Diyos, this will be over by about the second quarter of next year. Ang rami na kasi nagsu-surrender. And ang maganda diyan is ang armas,” Duterte said during a visit at the 5th ID in Gamu, Isabela on Tuesday (September 18).
The government and the communist peace panels have come to the fourth round of peace talks under the Duterte administration.
Duterte ordered the termination of the negotiations pending assessment of the agreements signed between all the past administrations and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and because the President wants to involve the public in future peace negotiations. – Marje Pelayo (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
