Duterte, high-ranking officials on CPP-NPA ‘kill list’ —Esperon

MANILA, Philippines— National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon confirmed on Wednesday (Dec. 18) of receiving information on the alleged “kill list” of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

Esperon said he is no longer surprised to learn that his name is on the list of what he claims is already a broken record as he had always been included in all sorts of action by the rebel group for his being active in the military.

“Of course, I am aware of that. I don’t make fun of that. But, we can take the necessary precautions, but that does not — in any way — deter or discourage me from pursuing my functions as a national security adviser.”

Aside from Esperon, several high-ranking officials, such as Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Noel Clement, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año, and National Commission on Indigenous Peoples Chairman Allan Capuyan, are also included in the “kill list”.

Even President Rodrigo Duterte’s name is also on the list although, the official said, it no longer came as a shock to them.

“Of course, automatic na ‘yun,” Esperon said.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, once again stressed that the government will not be implementing a ceasefire with the CPP-NPA this holiday season.

This is despite the appeal of Senator Imee Marcos for a two-day holiday ceasefire to give way for the soldiers to go home to their families.

“No, no, no. We do not recommend the Holiday ceasefire. Kasi, lugit tayo diyan eh. Alam nila kung sino mga sundalo natin, hindi naman natin alam kung sino sila. Kung anong ginagawa nila,” Lorenzana pointed out.

The official added that as long as the CPP-NPA is active with their offensive activities, the military operations against the communist group will remain.— (from the report of Harlene Delgado) /mbmf
