President Rodrigo Duterte announced that he wants TV host and actor Willie Revillame to run for a seat in the Senate in the upcoming 2022 elections.

"Matagal na tayong 'di nagkita pero palagi kitang naaalala dahil gusto ko sanang maging senador ka (We haven't seen each other for a long time but I always remember you because I wanted you to be a senator)," Duterte said in a to video message to Revillame.

Duterte said that they are willing to hold Revillame’s slot open until the last minute.

"Kung ayaw mo na talaga eh di puwede na tayong mag-usap ulit (If you really don't want to, then we can talk again)," Duterte said to the actor who is having second thoughts about his senatorial bid.

Duterte praised Revillame’s huge mass following.

"Bilib ako sa appeal mo sa masa (I am in awe of your appeal to the masses)," the president said.

An entertainment columnist revealed earlier in March that Revillame met with Duterte and his aide Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go over dinner in February where the president thanked the actor for his public service and charity work through “Wowowin.”

Willie, mahal kita. Pinapanood kita. Maraming salamat sa ginagawa mo sa ating mga kababayan. Magkasama tayo sa pagtulong. Kasama tayo sa grupo. Kasama ka namin sa grupo,” Duterte said.

(Translation: Willie, I love you. I'm watching you. Thank you so much for what you are doing to our countrymen. Let's work together to help. We are in the group. You are with us in the group.)
