MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte is seeking a probe into the issues plaguing the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the president is not pleased about the woes encountered by the event’s organizers, including early complaints on logistics and accommodation from several foreign athletes.

“The President is not pleased [with] what he’s been hearing about certain snafu, certain delays, certain allegations of athletes not being fed properly, athletes arriving late or not on time delivered to their places of rest or residence. He’s displeased,” Panelo said.

Duterte was in South Korea to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit when reports about the country’s hosting woes surfaced.

The chief executive returned to Manila on Tuesday night.

“There were allegations of fraud na lumalabas sa diyaryo, ayaw niya rin ‘yun. He wants to investigate that. Hindi uubra sa kanya ang corruption” Panelo said.

He said the investigation would likely cover all organizers of the event, including House Speaker and Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee chair Alan Peter Cayetano.

However, the Palace official said Duterte may no longer ask Cayetano about the mishaps as he already heard of his explanation, adding that the Congress may also launch its own probe into the issue. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Rosalie Coz)
