Ed Sheeran just made some pretty brutal comments about award shows and the timing was awkward

It's been a big week in the celebrity world. We had the 2021 VMAs and the first Met Gala in over two years, and while loads of our favourite famous faces were busy walking the red carpet of the glitzy events, Grammy award-winning singer songwriter Ed Sheeran was busy throwing major shade at the whole awards show vibe. Let's just say the timing was... awkward.

Speaking during a recent interview the "Bad Habits" singer revealed that he's not a big fan of major awards show, explaining that it's just not his vibe.

Speaking about this year's VMAs he said, "The room is filled with resentment and hatred towards everyone else, and it’s quite an uncomfortable atmosphere," he told Audacy's The Julia Show.

"It's the first time I ever felt that, because I went there in 2013," he continued. "In England our awards shows are just like, everyone gets drunk and no-one really cares who wins or loses, it's just a good night out.

"All the artists are sweet people," he added. "But they're like, surrounded by entourages that want them to win too, so it's one artist surrounded by 10 people and another artist surrounded by 10 people, and everyone is kind of giving each other the side eye. It's a really horrible atmosphere to be in there. I always walk away feeling really sad - I don't like it."

"The afterparties again, it's not just musicians, it's all their entourages and then you've got influencers and blah blah blah, so...

"I hosted the EMAs (Europe Music Awards) in 2015 and there was an afterparty and I was like 'I don't wanna go', I didn't want to have my entourage and then other peoples' entourages. So, because I was hosting I met all the artists and said to them 'I've rented the top floor of this hotel you can come with one person but don't bring any entourage ... it was just a really nice atmosphere, it wasn't like a who's bigger than who...

"So I did that after the VMAs this year, I just rented a dive bar in Brooklyn and Camila (Cabello) and Shawn (Mendes) came and Jack Harlow came, it was cool."

He also explained that he's not the only star who feels this way, with others telling him at this year's VMAs telling him they felt really "depressed" afterwards.

"It's nothing to do with MTV or the award show," he added. "It's [the same] at every other award show; at the Billboards, the Grammys at the AMAs (American Music Awards), it's just lots of people wanting other people to fail."

I mean, it sounds like he's got a point?
