NICHOLAS YONG: The game of thrones that is the Philippines presidential election is over. Now Bongbong Marcos is not just king Ilocos Norte, he will soon become president, 36 years after the Marcoses fled the country in disgrace. And so the North remembers, but the people forget.
We can talk about fake news all day, but here are the facts. Ferdinand Marcos was a dictator who ruled by martial law and stole billions from his own people. Many of his political opponents and ordinary people were arrested and tortured, many were murdered.
Millions suffered in poverty, while the Marcoses, including Bongbong, lived in luxury. But now history is being rewritten. Some claim that the rule of Marcos was a Golden age and that he was the Philippines' greatest president. Perhaps, the Marcos fancy themselves as the Targaryens reclaiming the Iron throne, but they are no dragons. The election is over, but history still matters, the truth matters.
