ERC on ‘expensive’ power rates: Complain to Visayan Electric

·1 min read

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has advised the Visayan Electric consumers to file their complaint regarding the expensive rates and other questionable charges in the billing to the distribution utility first.

ERC Visayas Field Office Hub Operations Division Chief Joel Bontuyan told SunStar that it should be the Visayan Electric who will explain the rates, although the ERC had approved the rates long time ago.

Bontuyan made the statement after some consumers, along with the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) and other stakeholders of Visayan Electric, made an appeal during a public symposium dubbed “Why Electricity Rates in Cebu City are Expensive?” at the University of Visayas’ main campus in downtown Cebu City on Saturday, May 28, 2022.

The consumers want the ERC to explain the expensive power rates.

But Bontuyan said the Visayan Electric is more knowledgeable on how they arrived with the computation, which is why they are the ones who should explain.

Bontuyan said everything has to go through public hearings before the ERC gives a decision whether to approve, deny or modify the application of the distribution utilities.

“It’s not as secretive ang ERC when it comes to dealing with these applications in disposing these applications,” he said, saying that everything has undergone public hearings, which are open to the public and where they can ask clarificatory questions.

He said the law requires that at least one of the public hearings should be conducted in the local government unit where the utility is holding its principal office and business address. (MKG)
