Espina: Business as usual

After the pandemic, food business in Cebu had to gradually pick up.

Of course, online selling for some time flourished as a means of living. We observe there are few locals who dine out for safety reasons. This will explain why few restaurants are not yet ready for a full swing food business.

Yet, diners still go to Laguna Garden, Chika-an sa Cebu, Dimsum Break at Cebu IT Park, and a few Chinese restaurants which are always filled up to capacity. The food industry is still the most productive. Pinoys love to eat. Tourists are beginning to come and that should be good especially for beach resorts. BE Resort, Bluewater Maribago, or Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa are easy favorites because they are clean and safe.

A week ago, we looked for some native bibingka along Salinas Drive, near Chika-an sa Cebu, but found them gone. Banana and camote cues are selling like hot cakes along Apas Road, and the 7-Eleven stores serve packed meals. Call center agents make these food joints alive! I catch so many of them at breakfast time.

The Department stores are still working out better schemes to survive. Online fashion and jewelry shops are stiff competitors. Children and ladies wear pants, shoes a-plenty. Oh, I was enticed to order some colorful curtains on a “buy one set, and get two more,” for a very low price. Mind you, the shoes, slippers and step-ins are saleable.

I live near IT Park and saw how business was down during the pandemic. But now it is beginning to pick up. And this is good for us who enjoy the comfort of saving time to go out to shop or dine. No traffic. The Church is just walking distance from where I live just as drugstores like Rose Pharmacy and Mercury Drug.

There were lessons we learned during the pandemic. Home cooking binds families. Staying at home to watch TV, reading, researching with friends are enlivening. Rediscovering oneself is priceless.

Sociologists say that we, Pinoys, smile, laugh or cry or eat for many reasons. That’s why we survive, and a crisis can’t put us down.
