DURING our active Jaycee years in the late ‘60s, we had a series of seminars on leadership, one of which was public speaking.
I remember what we often quoted about the Filipino smile. We smile for many reasons. We smile when we are happy. We smile when we are sad. We smile when we are scared, shy or do not know what to say.
Sociologists, like Frank Lunch, thought that the “Filipino Smile” symbolizes our values for hospitality, quest for social acceptance or “pakikisama.”
It is easier to smile because it is effortless compared to pouting. A “smile of confidence” exudes one’s attitude, values and positive thinking!
