Ex-convict shot dead in retaliation

AN EX-CONVICT died after he was shot by his opponent outside the Chinese cemetery in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City at 11:10 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2023.

Lord Anthony Arenso Otto, 18, of Sitio Laguna, Barangay Lorega-San Miguel, was brought by Carreta medical team to the Cebu City Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival by attending physician Dr. Keezel Nell At-At.

Suspect Joey Aroa Dumaguit, 32, a resident of Greenside, Barangay Hipodromo, was arrested in a hot pursuit operation by operatives of Mabolo Police Station and Special Weapons and Tactics.

Major Eraño Regidor, chief of Mabolo Police Station, said that based on the testimony of some witnesses, the victim was standing in the area when the suspect appeared from behind and without any provocation shot him at the back of his head, with the bullet exiting in his left temple.

Responding medical personnel said the victim was still breathing when they arrived at the scene, but later expired at the hospital.

After getting the name of the suspect, Regidor said they immediately went to Lorega, where they caught Dumaguit in his house.

They also recovered Dumaguit’s .38 revolver that was allegedly used in the crime.

During police investigation, the suspect confessed to the crime.

Dumaguit admitted that he was also shot by the victim last year but he decided not to file a case as he vowed to retaliate against the victim.

But he said his plan did not materialize after the victim was arrested in buy-bust operation by the agents of the City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU) of the Cebu City Police Office.

He added he only found the opportunity to take revenge after the suspect was released from Cebu City Jail last week.

“Magbawos-bawos na sila. Ang estorya ana nila last year, kaduha ni siya pusila sa biktima sa discohan. Wala siya magpa-blotter but it so happened nga na buy bust man sa CDEU, karon na priso nang tawhana nya naka gawas man na last week, nibalhin nag puyo sa Carreta didto na niya nabantayan iya na gyud gibawsan,” Regidor said.

(They retaliate against one another. What I heard about them, is that the suspect was shot by the victim twice at a disco party but he did not file a police blotter but it so happened that the victim was arrested in a buy-bust, sent to prison, released last week and moved to Carreta, where he noticed his presence and took revenge).

Both the suspect and the victim are involved in illegal drugs, but Regidor said they are still investigating whether the cause of their conflict was due to illegal drugs.

A case of murder is being prepared by police against Dumaguit. (AYB, TPT)
