FORMER senator and Toledo City mayor John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña has recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) while former barangay leader Charles Basillote lost his battle with the disease.
Osmeña, 85, was discharged from the hospital after 20 days, according to a Facebook post by Toledo City Community Affairs and Development Officer Ferliza Contratista on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.
“Senator John Henry Osmeña is now released from his 20 day hospitalization for Covid 19. Cheers and claps by hospital staff as he was sent home,” Contratista wrote about photos of the shirtless former mayor in her post.
She explained that Osmeña was not wearing a shirt because his bedsores have not healed yet.
Contratista’s post debunked rumors on social media that Osmeña had died.
Even while he was confined, Osmeña continued to give instructions to his staff, Contratista added.
In Talisay City, Basillote, a former Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president, has succumbed to Covid-19.
On his Facebook page, Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr. said he was saddened by Basillote’s passing.
“He left behind a good track record of service in his barangay and the city of Talisay,” Gullas said.
Basillote, who served as village chief of Dumlog, was elected ABC president from 2011 to 2014.
He also served as consultant for barangay affairs during the administration of former Talisay City mayor Johnny Delos Reyes. (JJL, JKV)
