- The season 3 finale of Yellowstone aired in August 2020.
- Paramount Network has already announced that the hit cable show has been picked up for a fourth season.
- Season 4, starring Kevin Costner and the rest of the Yellowstone, is expected to debut in summer 2021.
As dysfunctional as they may be, the Duttons are irresistible. Yellowstone fans can't seem to get enough of them, and good thing because the show has already been picked up for a fourth season. That means, fans have at least one more year of Yellowstone after the current season wraps. Even though the third season just ended, we already have lots of details about what's ahead for Kevin Costner's modern-day ranching drama in season 4.
When is Yellowstone coming back for season 4?
Months before the season 3 premiere, Paramount Network confirmed that their hit ranching drama isn't ending anytime soon: The network signed a deal with Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, to work on new projects, including the fourth season of the popular Paramount Network show. The third season debuted on Sunday, June 21, which means it's likely that season 4 will premiere in June 2021.
While there were concerns that filming would be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the show's creator confirmed that they were forging ahead with season 4. "We’re supposed to start mid-August, and we’re putting that together as best we can. I’m fortunate that this show shoots on a ranch in Montana. We’re going to shoot exclusively there this year, or in and around it," he told Deadline.
Recently, the show's casting directors announced that they were looking for season 4 extras to film from August through December. "Those who are selected to work on the project as extras will be paid. Shooting will begin in August and we are looking to hire locals to work as extras on the series through December. Filming will be in the Darby, Hamilton and Missoula areas. The casting call is open to men and women of all ethnicities, ages 9 or older," they wrote in a press release. Yep, that means you (yes, you!) have a chance to experience the beauty of Dutton Ranch IRL. If you live in or near Montana and are interested in learning the specifics, click here.
What will Yellowstone season 4 be about?
Given the way the third season ended (um, did Beth, Kayce, and John survive?), we know that season 4 will be just as dramatic as ever. Even Kelsey Asbille, who plays Monica, isn't sure how the show will move forward: "The end of season 3 is the most jaw-dropping, and I'm wondering how they'll move forward. It's funny because Taylor (Sheridan) has always told us that he knows how the show is going to end and I'd love to know," she tells Good Housekeeping.
Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie, is excited to explore more of Jamie's complicated past in season 4. "Where does Jamie end up? I'd like to know," he confesses. "I'm also excited to see who he really is because he's spent his whole life not really being himself. I think we're starting to get pieces of that now, so I think it's going to be really interesting to see."
Hopefully, this means the show will uncover more details about Jamie's history (his pregnant ex-girlfriend, for example), Beth's relationship with Rip, and Jimmy's future.
The show will follow a new format in the coming season: Due to Paramount Network's rebranding, "the plan is to present the show as a cinematic experience, possibly programming two episodes in a single night with limited commercial interruptions," according to Variety. Fewer commercials? Two episodes per night? We're in!
Will the entire cast, including Kevin Costner, return?
Although some fans are concerned that Kelly Reilly and Luke Grimes are leaving the show, it seems like the entire Yellowstone crew is on board for the fourth season. Costner, who plays John Dutton and executive produces the show, remains the backbone of the series. In the past, he's said that filming a scripted how "hasn't been an easy adjustment" for him, but he's committed because he believes Yellowstone has "gold dust on it."
Unless they decide to writeoff any characters, it seems like Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Forrie J. Smith, and Denim Richards will return for a fourth season, too. Only time will tell if newcomers Josh Holloway, John Emmet Tracey, Q’orianka Kilcher, and Jennifer Landon will survive the chaos on Dutton family ranch.
How can I stream older seasons of Yellowstone?
If you're late to the game, you can re-watch past seasons to familiarize yourself with the Dutton family. If you have cable, head to Paramount Network's website to stream all the previous episodes. But if you recently cut the cable cord to save money or just want to avoid commercials, you can buy each episode on iTunes, Amazon, YouTube, Google Play, or Vudu.
The show isn't available on Hulu or Netflix, and it looks like it won't be any time soon: Yellowstone landed an exclusive streaming deal at NBC's new streaming service, Peacock.
