Three dead as explosion rocks posh Taguig condo

(UPDATE 6) At least three people were killed and four others are wounded in an explosion in a posh condominium in Taguig.

The cause of explosion is still unknown and authorities are now working to determine the cause, said Interior Secretary Mar Roxas. He also urged the public not to speculate on the blast's origin. The explosion took place around 8 pm Friday at Unit 501 in Two Serendra.

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III personally supervised the probe at the blast site but refused to give interviews. Roxas said Aquino's standing order was to ensure that all government agencies are cooperating in the probe. The main road will remain closed as the probe continues said Roxas.

Roxas said a tenant of the heavily damaged condominium unit is being treated for burns. The blast site is facing the road leading to Market Market mall. The explosion's force hit an Abenson delivery van passing by the main road and all three passengers of the delivery van died.

A Starex van was also hit but its driver is safe but under a state of trauma, an official at the earlier site said.

Those injured, apparently bystanders, have been meanwhile rushed to St. Luke's Global City.

A statement from Taguig City administrator Atty. Joel Montales said authorities are "still in the process of getting all the info and  determining the cause."

"Despite the still sketchy info, the local govt is on top of the situation," Montales said.

A rescue and medical team is already in the vicinity.

"The city of Taguig and Mayor Lani Cayetano is presently in close coordination with the investigating authorities. We are looking into the incident and will inform the public as soon as possible as to the cause of the explosion," said Montales.

"We would like to ask the general public to stay calm and safe and allow the investigating authorities to do their work so that we can get to the bottom of the incident as soon as possible," he added.

Men from the Philippine National Police, the fire department, Scene of the Crime Operatives, Explosive Ordnance Division probed the van heavily hit by the condo explosion.

Broken glasses and shattered concrete are all over the blast vicinity.

Authorities have cordoned the area and traffic in the vicinity is heavy. Tenants of the condominium have safely evacuated.
