SPREADING malicious false information or fake news concerning Covid-19 is now prohibited in Mandaue City.
This after an ordinance prohibiting it was passed by the Mandaue City Council.
Mandaue City Councilor Carmelino del Mar, who authored the ordinance, said those caught spreading fake news in the city will be required to pay a P5,000 fine and to serve at least 72 hours or three days’ worth of community service.
Del Mar said following its approval before the Council, the ordinance is set to be signed by Mayor Jonas Cortes. After this, the ordinance will be up for implementation.
Aside from individual violators, del Mar said the ordinance also applies to business owners and their corporations.
If an establishment and its owner are caught spreading fake news, the city can appropriately revoke the owner’s business permit and stop their operations. (KFD)
