A FARMER died after he was washed away by flood caused by tropical storm Dante on Wednesday morning, June 2, 2021, in Barangay Tubod-Dugoan, Dumanjug town, Cebu.

Police Master Sergeant Nelson Mendaros identified the farmer as Joel Maravillas, 51, married, a resident of the barangay.

According to Mendaros, around 3:30 a.m. on June 2, Maravillas attempted to get his carabao that was wallowing in the river amid heavy rainfall and a deluge in the area.

They believed that the flood swept Maravillas away.

Maravillas’s family was worried when he did not come home, prompting them to survey the river.

The farmer was found dead a few meters away from the spot where he tied his carabao. His family found the carabao alive.

His family reported his tragic death at 3 p.m. Wednesday. When the police got to Maravillas’s residence, the family already held a wake for him.

Tropical storm Dante brought heavy rains starting Tuesday morning, June 1, until Wednesday, June 2. The storm signal in Cebu was lifted late Wednesday morning. (GPL/NRC)
