Feeding program

Tabontabon, Leyte (PNA) - The local government unit here vowed to pursue the supplemental feeding program funded by the national government in a bid to save day care learners from hunger and malnutrition.

Mayor Brendo Gamez, who is just three weeks in his office, said there's a need to push the program as many children from their town suffer from malnutrition due to poverty.

In 2012, the Department of Social and Welfare and Development set aside P547,200 for supplementary feeding of 456 children in 16 villages but after three months, the local government unit temporarily stopped the project.

More than half of the budget is still unused, Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Teresita Estrera admitted.

The official planned to return the money and waive her responsibility in the feeding program.

She said strict rules by state auditors that trigger glitches in liquidation process, prompted them to halt the project.
