In a world full of temptation and lack of discernment, I think it is prudent and wise to be cautious.
Complacency, more often than not, puts us in a situation where we are caught off-guard. It is always better to be alert. However, when a person is unable to think straight because of intoxication as a result of alcohol abuse (a usual scenario when one is having too much fun in a party), the unpredictable happens.
Everybody is anxious to party because of the months of restrictions as a result of the global pandemic, but we are still required to exercise discipline. The vulnerability of a woman among men (gay or straight) is always omnipresent. When things go out of hand, everybody panics. Then the unthinkable happens.
A hot topic recently on social media is the early demise of a flight attendant. The cabin crew was partying with some friends on New Year’s Eve when the fun ended with the tragic discovery of one Christine Angelica Dacera lying unconscious in a bathtub. The freak incident is under police investigation, so I will not discuss the details of the matter at hand. What happened at the hotel where the tragedy happened should be a lesson to our young.
When people started relocating for better opportunities, it became impossible for families to be reunited on New Year’s Eve. People started spending the holidays with friends. I consider myself lucky because I was raised in a generation where the practice then was for every member of the family to be reunited on special occasions. It was taboo then to be outside of one’s abode on New Year’s Eve.
My only wish is for people on social media to refrain from being judgmental regarding the incident while the facts of the case are still being analyzed by legal experts. Unsolicited commentaries do not help in the investigation and will only hurt the families involved, especially the family of the victim.
Nobody has the right to make predisposed conclusions as if the suspects are already guilty. We are dealing with lives that may be destroyed or altered when accusations are made in social media. The internet has a nobler purpose than baseless criticisms. Everybody has their own opinion on the unfortunate news, but if the narrative already borders on discussing the merits of the case, we should clam up and leave the matter to our legal experts.
Investigators must not leave any stone unturned. The nation is in so much anticipation as to the outcome of the case.
