The participation of Gilas Pilipinas in the third and final leg of the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers is in limbo as reports coming from the Saudi Basketball Federation are indicating that the games in Doha, Qatar have been cancelled because of the country’s rising number of cases.
Although Fiba has yet to issue an official statement on the status of the games, all signs are pointing to another postponement. The international governing body for basketball has already cancelled the match between Guam and Hong Kong because of travel restrictions that have been implemented. The two teams were set to compete in a bubble setting in Manama, Bahrain.
The Gilas men’s national team is set to leave for Qatar on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, to compete in Group A games on Feb. 18 to 23. They were slated to have two matches versus South Korea and another against Indonesia.
Should the postponement push through, three groups would be affected. These are Group A, B which has China, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Malaysia, and C, which has Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and hosts Qatar.
Chinese Taipei and Malaysia have already announced they will not be participating in the next set of games because of health concerns. / (JNP)
