FIBA sets 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Austria

The Philippines will get the chance to earn a ticket to the 3x3 basketball tournament of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics as it competes in the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament that has been rescheduled to May 2021 in Austria.

The announcement was made by FIBA on Tuesday night, June 23, 2020.

The FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament will take place in Graz, Austria on May 26-30, 2021. Built around a green and sustainable concept, the event will be the first-ever FIBA 3x3 official competition in Austria.

Vying for one of the tickets to the first-ever staging of the 3x3 basketball competition in the Olympiad will be the Philippine team composed of PBA stars CJ Perez and Mo Tautuaa and 3x3 standouts Joshua Munzon and Alvin Pasaol.

The quartet bagged a gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games.

The Philippines is placed in Group C, where it will be competing against the likes of Slovenia, France, Qatar and Dominican Republic. It will need to finish in the top two to advance to the playoffs of the 20-nation tilt.

Japan, China, Russia, and Serbia have already nabbed spots in the inaugural men's 3x3 tournament in the Tokyo Olympics, while the last remaining spot is for the winner of the Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Budapest.

The OQT was supposed to be held last March in Bangalore, India before the COVID-19 pandemic pushed FIBA to postpone the tournament. (JNP)
