Filbar's reinvents itself, brings Threadless Tees to PHL

The annual Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention is always been a great occasion for cosplay, toy customization, toy sales and autograph signing. Now it’s also a venue for big announcements, blockbuster movie promotions and celebrity sightings.

At the 2013 Toy Con in SM Megamall, held from June 14 to 16, comic book store Filbar’s took the opportunity to share big news.

The most important one: new management. Now owned by Collecticon, Inc., the popular store is looking at quite a facelift.

First on the list is a new branch in Festival Mall in Alabang, much to the joy of their customers. One comment on the shop’s Facebook announcement said, “YAY~! I've always been miffed Filbar's have had not any branches in this area.” The Festival Mall branch will feature the new black and white logo and store design, a departure from the old green and white logos. This new store décor will adorn all upcoming branches.

Hand in hand with the new logo and new store design are newly-acquired licenses. At the Filbar’s panel during the Toy Con, Collecticon announced that they will soon be selling products from the Dark Horse Deluxe Game of Thrones line, Star Trek props from QMx, cute Marvel plushies and vinyl figures from Funko, and Rubie's Costumes. The Rubie's Costumes Slave Leia outfit was on display at the Filbar’s booth during the 2013 Toy Con.

Fans of will be happy to learn that the funky t-shirts will now be sold in Filbar’s too. On Threadless, independent artists can submit designs and the site’s users can vote for their favorites.

Based on scores and user feedback, ten designs are selected weekly for a limited run. Users can vote and comment to request reprints of various designs, and each designer gets credit and payment. Designs tend to be geeky, artsy and full of pop culture references:

And lastly, Filbar’s will soon launch an officially licensed MARVEL concept store, scheduled to open in Glorietta 5 within 2013. The store, named “Kapow! Universe”, will be a joint effort between Collecticon, MINDstyle and Disney, and promises an experience “where fans can shop for original and exclusive Marvel apparel, comics and collectibles in a completely unique shopping environment straight out of the comic books!” — TJD, GMA News
