Filipino basketball superstar Kai Sotto announced in his social media account on Wednesday (July 13) that he will join renowned sports agency, Wasserman, after he failed in the 2022 NBA Rookie Draft last month.

The Los Angeles-based sports management company has likewise welcomed Sotto in their Instagram account.

Basketball stars such as Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose, Jalen Duren, Klay Thompson, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, Domantas Sabonis, and Evan Mobley are among of the company's clients.

With the move, Sotto is officially parting ways with his handler, Joel Bell of Bell Sports, who brokered his stint with Adelaide 36ers in the 2021-2022 season of Australia’s National Basketball League.

After failing to get drafted to the NBA, Bell said in an interview that the 20-year-old 7-foot-3 center will instead join the Philippine men’s basketball team Gilas in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in Indonesia, which Sotto later clarified that it is not true.

Bell likewise said that joining the NBA Summer League is not an option for Sotto – a statement he also recanted, as they didn’t lock him with a team while further exploring his options. In the end, Sotto also missed the Summer League, which had already started this July.

After this, nobody heard from the former Ateneo High School star as offers ran dry for him, until he announced this.

With him joining Wasserman, his dreams of one day joining the NBA is very much alive, with East West Private (EWP), which also handles Sotto, saying that they will be thrilled to work with Wasserman.

“Beyond blessed for Kai and excited to work side by side with Wasserman,” EWP said.

Wasserman will also be taking other high-profile athletes like United States women’s football team player Megan Rapino, and Olympic swimming champion Katie Ledecky.
