From newly-wed to newly-widowed—that’s the story of a Filipino couple in San Lorenzo, California after the husband was shot and killed in a road-rage incident on Sunday (September 18).

Love, wife of 30-year-old Rienheart Asuncion, was widowed just four months after their wedding.

According to reports, someone had cut into Asuncion’s lane at about 430pm while he was on Facetime with Love. This led to a chase that ended at the intersection of Lewelling Boulevard and Hesperian Boulevard in San Lorenzo.

When Asuncion got out of his car to confront the other driver, he was shot dead.

According to KTVU FOX 2, Love said, "I told him not to get out, not to get out from his car, but he didn’t hear me. Maybe just one or two steps or three steps away from his car, I just heard a lot of gunshots – a lot of gunshots."

The widow, who said she sees her husband in her dreams, added, "I’m in grief, a lot of pain. I’m in pain. It’s hard to accept."

Rienhart’s mother Anna Tolentino was equally distraught over the fate of her son, who worked at Tesla as an installer in Fremont. "Why you have to shot it like that, just out there, small argument like that? He killed like an animal."

Alameda County sheriff’s Lt. Ray Kelly noted that the tragedy is a reminder not to engage with angry drivers or passengers. "Get yourself away from any type of escalating road-rage situation. We really would encourage people to take an exit, or to make a turn, and get away from the situation."
