Nesthy Petecio is the second Filipina world boxing champion, after Josie Gabuco in 2012. She won the featherweight division of the 2019 Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s World Boxing Championships.
She is the second-best boxer in the women’s elite 57kg weight category, according to the September 2020 update of the AIBA world rankings.
The 29-year-old Petecio started boxing at the age of seven in Tuban, Davao del Sur, before becoming a part of the Philippine national team at the age of 15.
She has represented the country in four editions of the SEA Games, amassing a medal haul of one gold and three silvers. Her breakthrough gold medal came in the 2019 Manila Games.
She is the second Filipina boxer to qualify for the Olympics, where she will compete in the women’s featherweight.
