Carlos Yulo is the first Southeast Asian male to conquer the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships after winning the men’s floor exercise gold in 2019.
He is the second Filipino athlete to book a place for the Olympics.
The 21-year-old is among the youngest members of the Philippine contingent which will compete in the quadrennial meet. He is also the smallest in height, standing at 4-foot-11 (1.50m).
In 2019, he asserted dominance at the 30th SEA Games where he emerged as the most bemedalled athlete of the Philippines with two golds and five silvers.
He is mentored by Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, who was tapped by the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines back in 2013 to lead the country’s men’s artistic team.
