Kiyomi Watanabe is poised to become the first female judo athlete from the Philippines to ever compete at the Olympics.
She punched her ticket to the Tokyo Games after being granted qualification via continental quota in the women’s Under-63kg division, according to the official qualification of the International Jude Federation (IJF).
She sits at No.41 in her weight-class rankings with 1,506 points.
The 24-year-old judoka is one of the most dominant forces of the Philippine contingent at the SEA Games, where she earned four gold medals and a bronze.
At the onset of her national team stint back in 2011, she competed at the 70kg division before moving down to 63kg where she has drawn more success in the sport in recent years.
