Fire hits firecracker ‘storehouse’

A LATE afternoon fire destroyed a two-story residential building used as a storage area for firecrackers in Sitio Kinalumsan, Barangay Canjulao, Lapu-Lapu City last Saturday, December 28, 2019.

Personnel of the Lapu-Lapu Fire District were able to respond to the fire incident at around 2:24 p.m.

By 2:30 p.m., the fire was raised to third alarm after they received word that the house allegedly contained firecrackers.

The fire was eventually placed under control at around 3 p.m.

Fire Officer 1 John Simon Tepait of the Lapu-Lapu City Fire District told SunStar Cebu that the building was reportedly owned by a certain James Berdin.

One of the building’s renters, identified as Jocelyn Miñoza, 43, called the fire station after seeing smoke at the building’s second floor.

Initially, Miñoza reportedly heard a loud explosion at the building’s second floor and decided to check it out.

When she went out, Miñoza saw smoke coming out of the building’s roof, prompting her to call the fire department.

Miñoza said the second floor of the building was reportedly being used to store firecrackers.

But authorities have yet to determine who owns the firecrackers stored in the building and whether those firecrackers caused the blaze.

Tepait said the fire destroyed around P160,000 worth of property.

Luckily, no one was killed or hurt during the incident.

Tepait said they still can’t determine what caused the fire since their investigation is still ongoing. (KFD)
