Fire hits building in Kamputhaw, kills one

AN 18-YEAR-OLD store worker was killed while two others were hurt when a dawn fire hit a mixed-use building in Sitio Martinez, Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City on Monday, June 15, 2020.

Fire personnel identified the lone fatality as Jerson Ellera, 18, who works for a store in the area where the fire started.

A couple, Edgar Necesario, 68, and his wife, Sylvia, 65, who were living in the building, were also brought to a nearby hospital after sustaining injuries from the fire.

The fire destroyed around P2 million worth of properties.

Senior Fire Officer 1 Mariechel Caburnay of the Cebu City Fire Station told SunStar Cebu that the fire started at around 2:47 a.m.

Due to the surrounding buildings and other structures near the fire scene, fire personnel immediately raised the fire alarm to third alarm before 3 a.m., which forced nearby firefighting units to join the fray.

The building had a store and some residential quarters established.

Caburnay said after the fire, fire personnel discovered Ellera's burnt corpse inside the building.

While the elderly couple were rescued by firefighters after they loudly called for help inside their residential quarters.

Necesario told Sunstar Cebu that he and his wife were sleeping inside their quarters when they heard a loud blast outside.

"I thought that a shooting incident had occurred outside our quarters. It was only when I verified when I found the building were are in was already on fire," Necesario said in Cebuano.

The fire was eventually placed under control at around 3:12 a.m.

Caburnay said that their investigation found that the fire began in the residential quarters of a certain Fe Necesario.

Fire officials could not determine if the owner of the residential quarter where the fire started is related to the elderly couple rescued earlier.

Caburnay believed that the fire occurred due to a electrical short circuit, but they are still conducting further investigation. (BBT/JKV)
