Ready for some nostalgia? It's official: Margot Robbie is coming to screens as the most famous doll in the world, Barbie herself. Reports that the actress was working on the role first surfaced all the way back in 2018, and now the film finally has pictures and a US release date. Exciting!

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Barbie film, including the cast, release date, pictures, plot and more...

Who has been cast in the Barbie film?

As we already know, Margot Robbie takes the lead as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling will play Ken. And it gets even more exciting, as a whole host of famous names are starring alongside them. They include Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Simu Liu and Hari Nef, according to Variety, while Will Ferrell reportedly plays the CEO of a toy company.

Confirming her role in the film, Alexandra Shipp from Love, Simon posted a series of behind the scenes photos with a sweet caption to Instagram. She wrote, "Thank you @barbie thank you #GretaGerwig for trusting me to portray one of your fabulous Barbies. Thank you everyone who made this experience possible 💖 I felt all the feels and love these humans so hard with all my strength! Thank you cast, thank you crew, thank you production without everyone this experience wouldn’t be possible thank you thank you
THANK YOU!"

As for the newest addition, Sex Education's Emma Mackey has *finally* confirmed that she's joining the cast, following much speculation. The actress opened up about the project in an interview with Empire, telling the publication, "Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]."

Alongside confirming her appearance in the film, Emma's comments have also semi-verified a fan theory that there will be multiple versions of Barbie on screen. Exciting!

Emma also compared Barbie to her upcoming Emily Bronte biopic, saying, "It’s great to do comedy, because Emily was a sad, dark drama. Barbie is light and funny and silly and American and pink." Fans had previously pointed out how similar Emma and Margot Robbie look, so it's plausible that their resemblance could form part of the plot too.

Behind the camera, Greta Gerwig is directing (she's previously directed Lady Bird and Little Women), so we're expecting great things. What's more, Margot Robbie co-runs the production company behind the film, LuckyChap Entertainment, with her husband and best friend.

The latest rumoured addition to the cast is the one and only Dua Lipa. According to a source the singer has joined the cast following an impressive performance in upcoming project Argylle, which is set to air later this year. Although, with nothing officially confirmed at this stage our fingers are officially and hopefully crossed.

What have the cast said about the Barbie film?

Actor Simu Liu has opened up about his "painful" preparation for the Barbie film, and it all sounds very intense. While the actor's role in the movie hasn't officially been confirmed just yet, he's rumoured to be playing a Ken doll (with fans speculating that the story could involve various version of Ken).

Speaking to The Independent, Simu revealed that he waxed his body for his Barbie role, marking a moment of particularly painful prep. He explained, "Waxing has been an education to say the least. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life."

Opening up about fan theories surrounding the film, he added, "Honestly, the discourse online is giving me life. With every casting announcement or bit of news, they’re like: 'What is this?' And that’s perfect – the less you know about it the better."

So much suspense!

Are there any pictures from the Barbie film?

On 27th June 2022, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were photographed in character as Barbie and Ken, rollerskating down the boardwalk in Venice Beach, California. You know neon is in for Spring/Summer, right?

We've got our first glimpse of Margot in character as Barbie in early June 2022, and she looks *uncanny*. Warner Bros tweeted the snap alongside confirmation of the US cinema release date (21st July 2023, FYI). We can see Margot sat in Barbie's iconic pink convertible car while sporting a (perfectly coordinated) blue outfit and blonde blow dry, and it literally feels like the doll herself has come to life.

We also got some brand new first look snaps of Ryan as Ken in the upcoming film, and of course, these pics caused a bit of a stir on Twitter.

Is there a trailer for the Barbie film?

Sadly, there's not a trailer just yet. However, if the first glimpse of Margot in character as Barbie (above) is anything to go by, we can bet this one's going to be exciting.

What is the Barbie film about?

As for what will actually happen in the film, Margot Robbie has teased that it'll defy viewers' expectations. She told The Hollywood Reporter, "We like the things that feel a little left of centre. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.'"

We can't wait.

When is the Barbie film released?

Barbie officially wrapped filming in July 2022, a year ahead of the film's expected release date. Sharing a photo from the wrap party on Instagram, My Mad Fat Diary star Sharon Rooney wrote, "Barbie, a true gift 💝" Ana Kayne also shared a photo of her chair on set with the caption, "That’s a wrap y’all 💕💘💗💅🏼"

Warner Bros has confirmed that the Barbie film will officially come to US cinemas on 21st July 2023 - just over a year away! It's not confirmed yet whether the release date will be the same for the UK. But we'd expect Barbie to hit screens in the UK either on the same date, or some time soon after July 2023.

So, lots to look forward to, then.
