A 59-year-old fisherman was killed after being hit by an overspeeding motorcycle along the national highway in Barangay Tajao, Pinamungajan town, southwest Cebu on Wednesday dawn, June 29, 2022.

Corporal Ryan Manguilimutan, an investigator for the Pinamungajan Police Station, identified the lone fatality as Romeo Arnaiz, 59, a resident of Sitio Bulubugan, in Barangay Tajao.

The driver of the motorcycle, Arnel Salido Servantes, 32, a resident of Barangay Luray in Toledo City, is currently being admitted at the Pinamungajan District Hospital after incurring several injuries during the incident.

Manguilimutan told SunStar Cebu that Arnaiz was walking along the highway to his usual fishing grounds at around 3:30 a.m. when Servantes, onboard his motorcycle, suddenly hit him as he was proceeding towards Toledo City.

Witnesses told police that minutes before the incident, Servantes was reportedly driving out of his lane and was constantly swerving and speeding.

Manguilimutan said Servantes reportedly went drinking with a friend who lives in Barangay Tajao prior to the incident.

The physician who handled Servantes also confirmed to police that he was intoxicated at that time he was brought to the hospital, Manguilimutan added.

Not drunk

Despite the physician's findings, Servantes insisted to police that he was not drunk at that time, Manguilimutan said.

Manguilimutan said that Servantes has been transfered to the Toledo City District Hospital for further treatment.

He assured that Servantes will face jail time once he is released from the hospital. Servantes could be sued for reckless imprudence with homicide.

But Manguilimutan said that Arnaiz's family has yet to decide if they plan to sue Servantes. (GDC)
