A 32-YEAR-OLD fisherman died while spearfishing in the seawaters off Purok Taroy, Barangay Calumpang, in the southern Cebu town of Oslob on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

Master Sergeant Albert Almario, investigator of Oslob Police Station, said Sonny Pancho, of Barangay Jagdan, Oslob, had gone spearfishing with his neighbor only identified as Mans around 11 a.m. Sunday.

A few hours later, Mans noticed that Pancho failed to come up to the sea surface after going down to get his spear gun that was stuck around 15 meters deep below sea level.

Mans then asked help from fellow fisherman Cuperio Labiste.

Almario told SunStar Cebu the incident happened around 1:30 p.m. of August 28 and was reported at their station at 2:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard personnel recovered the victim's body around 4 p.m. of the same day.

The victim was brought to Oslob District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Almario believed that the victim might have lost oxygen while at the bottom of the sea to get his spear gun.

"Ang among theory ani nga gikuha niya ang pana basin wala kaigo sa isda unya naipit ba ni sa bato dayon gipugos og kuha apiki sa hangin, lalom pod kaayo ang dagat, so mao to wala na kaagwanta nalumos ang maong biktima," Almario said.

(Our theory is that he took his spear gun that got stuck in stone at the bottom of the sea after it missed a fish, but it took him long to retrieve the fishing gear, causing him to lose oxygen and drown).

Pancho's wife said her husband was planning to fish during the nighttime but went to the sea due to his neighbor's insistence.

Pancho left behind his wife and two children. (GDC, TPT)
