Former ONE lightweight champion Eduard Folayang looks to end a three-fight slump as he takes on Chinese veteran Zhang Lipeng in the main event of ONE Championship - “Battleground II” on Aug. 13 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
Folayang, once the poster boy of Philippine MMA, dropped his latest contest, a trilogy with Japanese superstar Shinya Aoki on April 28.
Aoki submitted Folayang with an armbar in the first round.
Folayang also lost both of his fights prior to his second rematch with Aoki. He lost to Tony Caruso by unanimous decision and Peter Buist by split decision.
The 36-year-old Folayang’s last win was a technical decision over Mongolian Tsogookhuu Amarsanaa on Nov. 8, 2019.
Zhang, on the other hand, is a former UFC fighter and a winner of The Ultimate Fighter China in 2014.
Zhang beat Wang Sai by split decision to become the welterweight winner of The Ultimate Fighter China.
Zhang fought three more times in the UFC, beating Brendan O’Reilly and losing to Chris Wade and Kajan Johnson.
After his stint in the UFC, Zhang went on an impressive 21-2 run in China-based organization Kunlun Fight.
Zhang will be making his ONE Championship debut. Folayang, a veteran from Team Lakay, is 22-11, while the 31-year-old Zhang is 30-11-2. Meanwhile, former ONE strawweight king Alex Silva (9-6) takes on Miao Li Tao (6-3) in the co-main feature. (EKA)
