FORMER lightweight champion Eduard Folayang returns to the cage following a nine-month hiatus as he takes on promising Aussie prospect Tony Caruso in ONE Championship: “Inside the Matrix” on Oct. 30 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
The 35-year-old Folayang, who fights out of Baguio’s Team Lakay, will have his first taste of action since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. He fought last Jan. 31, 2020 and lost to Pieter Buist via a split decision at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.
Folayang is one of the pioneering Filipino fighters in the ONE Championship. He made his debut in the first ever event of ONE Championship, which was called ONE FC at that time, in 2011. He beat A Sol Kwon via unanimous decision at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. This will be his 20th fight for ONE Championship.
The highlight of Folayang’s career was when he won the ONE Championship lightweight belt with a shocking third round stoppage of Japanese superstar Shinya Aoki in 2016.
Folayang has also fought some of the elite in the ONE Championship, the likes of Eddie Alvarez, Martin Nguyen, Adrian Pang, Kotetsu Boku and Kamal Shalorus.
On the other hand, Caruso just came off the first loss of his career. The 28-year-old Adelaide native lost by unanimous decision to the same fighter that Folayang last fought, Buist.
Aside from 35-fight veteran Jai Bradney, Folayang is the most experienced fighter that Caruso has ever faced. Folayang is 22-9, while Caruso is 7-1.
The show features four world title fights.
Aung La Nsang (26-10) defends his ONE light heavyweight crown against undefeated challenger Reinier de Ridder (12-0); ONE welterweight king Christian Lee (13-3) takes on unbeaten Iuri Lapicus (14-0); ONE lightweight champion Martin Nguyen (13-3) defends his title against Thanh Le (11-2); and ONE flyweight women’s champion Jingnan Xiong (14-2) faces off with former title challenger Tiffany Teo (9-1).
