A FORMER disbursing officer of the Land Transportation Office in Central Visayas (LTO 7) who has been tagged as the number 1 most wanted person in Cebu province was arrested by members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Cebu Provincial field unit.

The suspect, identified as Marissa Abear Veriña, was arrested on the same day a warrant was issued against her Tuesday, July 5, 2022, for 30 separate cases, including violation of Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, 10 counts of malversation of public funds and falsification of public documents and other cases with P30,000 bail granted for each case.

Veriña allegedly issued multiple checks supported by false documents that cannot be tracked properly by the Commission on Audit, which led her to being sued.

After learning about her lawsuit, Veriña resigned from her job and went into hiding in Shanwi, China but returned to Cebu after several weeks.

The accused reportedly kept on transferring from Lapu-Lapu City to Minglanilla town in southern Cebu and back to elude the police.

Veriña was arrested Tuesday last week, July 5, by the CIDG operatives, along with the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company and the Cebu City Police Office, based on a warrant of arrest issued against her.

As of Tuesday, July 12, 2022, another 16 arrest warrants were issued by the court against the suspect for her other cases.

Veriña had previously worked as clerk at LTO 7 from December 1999 to September 2007.

One of her tasks was to issue payroll checks for all LTO 7 employees, including the disbursement of funds for administrative and operational purposes.

Colonel Ireneo Dalogdog, chief of CIDG 7, said they have expanded their operation against wanted persons following the order of their superior, Police Major General Eliseo Cruz. (AYB, TPT)
