President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed TV host-comedian and former Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp's (PAGCOR) official Arnell Ignacio as chief of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

In a statement on Wednesday (Aug 10), Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said that Ignacio, who also served as OWWA deputy administrator in 2018 before resigning, will now occupy the Administrator position of the agency.

"He was reappointed in September of last year to the same post and will now occupy the position of Administrator," Cruz-Angeles said.

In a Facebook post, Ignacio thanked Marcos Jr. for giving him the trust to lead the agency.

“Reading the news… Buffering ako, halos hindi ako makapaniwala (I’m buffering and I almost cannot believe it),” Ignacio said.

Meanwhile, outgoing OWWA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac will now serve as undersecretary of the newly created Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) according to Malacañang.

The DMW has administrative control over OWWA and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

Cacdac welcomed Ignacio’s appointment as his successor.

"We welcome and we fully support incoming administrator Arnell," the new DMW undersecretary of welfare and foreign employment said in an interview with ABS-CBN.

Cruz-Angeles, meanwhile, added that POEA Administrator Bernard Olalia was also appointed as DMW's Undersecretary for Licensing and Adjudication.

Olalia, however, will continue to serve as POEA OIC until DMW is deemed fully constituted on the approval of the 2023 budget.

DMW Secretary Toots Ople said that former Labor Assistant Secretary Maria Anthonette Velasco-Allones and Atty. Patricia Yvonne Caunan will serve as DMW Undersecretary for Finance and Internal Affairs and Undersecretary for Policy and International Cooperation, respectively.
