Former world title challenger Dasmariñas faces Ponteras in Tacloban

ONE-TIME world title challenger Michael Dasmariñas is slowly rebuilding his career back up after losing his first world title attempt last year.

He’ll keep himself busy with a confidence-boosting fight against experienced former regional champion Ryan Rey Ponteras for the vacant GAB Philippines super bantamweight belt on Oct. 15 at the Tacloban Convention Center in Tacloban City.

Dasmariñas challenged Japanese superstar and pound-for-pound No. 2 Naoya Inoue for the latter’s World Boxing Association (WBA) Super and International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight belts. Dasmariñas only lasted for three rounds after getting knocked out by Inoue in Las Vegas.

The 30-year-old Dasmariñas settled for a technical draw with Ernesto Saulong, six months after his loss to Inoue. He finally returned to the winning column after a third round technical knockout over Danny Tampipi last March 12.

Ponteras is looking to bounce back after losing his last two contests. He lost to South Korean Seong Yeong Yang by unanimous decision in South Korea on Dec. 4, 2021. He challenged Yuttapong Tongdee for the latter’s WBA Asia bantamweight belt and lost by unanimous decision in Thailand last month.

Dasmarinas is 31-3-2 with 21 knockouts, while Ponteras is 23-16-3 with 12 knockouts.
