FOR allegedly bad-mouthing a store on social media, four women were arrested by the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit (Racu)-Central Visayas in different barangays in Barili town, southwestern Cebu on December 26, 2019.
Racu-Central Visayas personnel caught Anelyn Gabiana, 25; Noemi Cabasa, 29; Iris Montebon, 30; and Catherine Beltran, 25, based on the warrant of arrest issued by Cebu City Regional Trial Court Branch 11 Judge Ramon Daomilas.
The Barili residents are facing a cyber libel case, a violation under Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012). Each accused posted bail of P30,000 last December 27, 2019.
Gabiana, Cabasa, Montebon and Beltran are among the 28 persons charged for allegedly smearing the image of the store owned by Lynette Estrada, according to Police Staff Sergeant Ronelle Jay Ocariza, assistant investigator at Racu-Central Visayas.
Ocariza said the accused reportedly painted Estrada’s Sto. Niño Merchandise in a bad light on Facebook.
The police officer urged netizens to think twice before ranting on social media as they risked being slapped with a cyber libel complaint by the persons they criticized. (GPL/KAL)
