INMATES at the Cebu City Jail will be allowed to receive Christmas gifts from their loved ones this holiday season.

Mayor Edgardo Labella said jail authorities will set up a booth inside the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda to accept the gifts for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 29 and Dec. 30, 2020.

Labella said families of PDLs have to follow the odd and even scheme of their respective quarantine passes.

Families holding quarantine passes with codes ending in an even number (2, 4, 6, 8, 0) can bring their gifts on Tuesday. Those with quarantine passes with codes ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) can bring their gifts on Wednesday.

The booth will be open starting at 9 a.m.

The mayor said the gifts or packages will be inspected for contraband.

He said K-9 units and a weapon detector will be at the site.

Labella said the gift sender will sign a document containing his or her name as well as the recipient’s. That way, authorities can easily track them if they find illegal items inside the packages.

The Cebu City Jail prohibited the acceptance of any goods outside the jail facility when the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases inside the facility rose.

Labella said he will make an exception this time and will temporarily lift the ban.

“But for humanitarian considerations and for spirit of Christmas season, I am allowing them but there has to be a regulation,” he said.

City Councilor Dave Tumulak and City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. will oversee the activity with the help of members of the Cebu City Police Office and the jail warden. (JJL)
