29 Sep – Being one of the few celebrities with a dark complexion, Gabbi Garcia admitted that she has learned to love herself more for being a "morena" rather than succumbed to expectations because of the expectation itself.
As reported on GMA News, the actress who spoke about the issue of skin colour and the country's obsession with being fair-skinned with BJ Pascual, said that she never cared about her skin colour before - that is until she made her showbiz debut in 2014 and had people around her advising her to take whitening products.
"When I was in high school, I didn't care much about skin colour... But then when I entered the industry, trying to figure out my place, I heard there are a lot of rumours that people who are going to say "You know you need to be more whitened to get this" or "It would be okay if you are white'. It was then that I realised the importance of loving yourself and your skin colour," she said.
Garcia said that it was easy to lose one's confidence having people around you telling you that your skin colour is not good enough and that you should be whiter and fairer.
"When I saw many people like that, I gained more self-confidence to love myself. That's where my confidence built up and I was like, "No, I'll love myself even more because of these people around me"," she said.
