Gay man who tried to rob German national nabbed via ‘citizen’s arrest’

A 27-YEAR-OLD openly gay man was nabbed through citizen’s arrest after he and two of his unidentified companions tried to rob a German national a few meters away from his condominium in Apitong St. in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City, on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022.

Edwin Sanchez, 27, and two of his unidentified companions, who were also gay, were wandering in the area when they spotted Anton Screibmeuller, 59, who was walking towards his condo, at around Thursday afternoon.

But as Sanchez and another companion continued convincing Screibmuller, their other companion discreetly reached out to one of the German national’s pockets and took his smartphone worth P80,000.

Screibmuller, however, was able to notice that he was being robbed and immediately tried to grab on one of the suspects before they could flee. It was then that Sanchez was caught by the German national.

Screibmuller, who was still holding on to Sanchez, immediately went to his condo and called their security guard so that they could report the matter to the police.

Though Sanchez’s companions were able to flee with Screibmuller’s smartphone, Tagsip and his personnel were able to recover the device after they were able to trace it in Sitio Cabantan in Barangay Luz, Cebu City.

According to witnesses, Sanchez’s two cohorts left the phone there and immediately fled.

Tagsip said they are still conducting a follow-up investigation to determine the identities of Sanchez’s two companions.

Sanchez, who is currently detained at the Abellana Police Station, is set to be charged by local police for theft. (BBT / JKV)
