The latest movie from the Despicable Me franchise, Minions: The Rise Of Gru, is out in cinemas. And, in an ironic #Gentleminions TikTok trend, teenagers are dressing up to watch the movie in suits and generally very nice clothing.

Fans of the Minions from around the world are turning up at the movies in large groups wearing fancy clothes, in an apparent dig at stereotypes of the movie's target audience: children and families.

These kids also mimic the villainous hand gesture of the character Gru, the leader of the Minions, who's voiced by Steve Carell.

This trend was hashtagged as #Gentleminions, aka "Gentlemen Minions".

Although the Despicable Me and spin-off Minions movies are targeted at pre-teens, the series has also garnered a cult following among adults and teenagers, simply because the Minions are ridiculously cute and funny.

Although these kids were just having fun, some cinemas have resorted to banning people from watching the movie if they turn up wearing formal attire. Some of these teenagers reportedly became rowdy during the movie while having fun in costume, disrupting the movie, throwing things and even booing moviegoers in regular clothes.

The #Gentleminions trend reached Asia too – thankfully, kids here have not been as inconsiderate as those in other places.

Here are people in the Philippines pulling up to the movies as #Gentleminions:
