Germany in dire need of nurses - Binay

Germany is badly in need of nurses that one of its top officials had to bring his child to Morocco because of the lack of nurses to assist for in surgery.

This is how huge Germany's need for nurses said Binay who arrived from the European country Monday night after representing President Benigno S. Aquino III in the Asia Pacific Weeks 2013 last week.

The Vice President, who is the Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Workers' Concerns, expressed hope that Filipino nurses could help fill in the shortage.

"For the Philippines, it means an opportunity for our nurses to secure beneficial employment. And for Germany, it addresses the shortage of nurses in the country," Binay said in an interview upon arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 1.

An initial batch of 50 Filipino nurses will be deployed in 2013 and another batch of 500 will be sent by next year by virtue of an agreement between the Philippines and Germany.

Binay has expressed the Philippine government's gratitude to Germany for choosing Filipino nurses to address the European country's shortage on healthcare workers in his meeting with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle last week in Berlin.

He also presented the "instrument of ratification" that implements the bilateral agreement opening the German healthcare sector to Filipino workers.

The agreement which provides for a government-to-government placement system of Filipino health workers for temporary employment in Germany was signed on March 19 by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the German Federal Employment Agency.

Binay said German Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Dr. Ursula von der Leyen also assured that Filipino nurses will enjoy benefits similar to their German counterparts which include having the right to repatriate their pensions in full when they retire.
