TWO-TIME world title challenger Mercito Gesta had a successful ring return after a unanimous decision win over Joel Diaz Jr. in the 10-round main event of Golden Boy Promotions’ “Fight Night” show on Friday, April 22, 2022 (PH time) at the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio, California.

The 34-year-old Gesta got the nod of all three judges. Judges Carla Caiz and Damian Walton both scored it 96-92, while judge Fernando Villareal saw it a bit closer with a 95-93 score in favor of the Mandaue City native.

Gesta immediately showcased his punching power and dropped Diaz Jr. twice in the opening round. Gesta caught Diaz Jr. with a left straight that sent him to the canvas just a minute into the fight. He dropped Diaz Jr. again with a combination near the ropes.

Diaz survived the onslaught and made it competitive but was unable to convince the judges.

Gesta improved to 33-3-3 with 17 knockouts, while Diaz Jr. dropped to 26-3 with 22 knockouts.

This is Gesta’s first win over three years. His last win was back in 2018, wherein he beat Robert Manzanarez by majority decision in a World Boxing Organization NABO lightweight title fight in Indio, California.

Gesta fought for a world title twice but lost on both occasions. He lost to then International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight champion Miguel Vasquez in 2012 and against the World Boxing Association (WBA) Jorge Linares in 2018 both by unanimous decision. (EKA)
