Gilas gets past Saudi Arabia to sweep 5th window games in FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers

The Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball squad completed a sweep of their games in the fifth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers after defeating hosts Saudi Arabia, 76-63, on Monday morning at the King Abdullah Sports City.

While it was a far cry from the 84-46 victory the Jordan Clarkson-powered Gilas had over Saudi Arabia in the last window, it was still a solid victory for the Filipinos which got their act together in the second half to put away the resilient Saudi Arabian squad.

Talisay City native Roger Pogoy helped spark the Gilas’ breakaway in the third where he canned three triples to help push their lead to 16, 50-34, after being up by just six, 31-25, at halftime.

Pogoy finished with 13 points and four rebounds, while Dwight Ramos had 13 points, four assists, and three rebounds.

Big man Kai Sotto was also a dominant force down low on both ends of the floor as he compiled 11 points, nine rebounds, five blocks, two assists, and a steal.

Reigning PBA MVP Scottie Thompson also missed out on a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.

The Gilas improved to 5-3 heading to home games against tough foes Jordan and Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia fell to 2-6 in Group E.
