The Gilas Pilipinas has broken camp from the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna after the province was placed under ECQ because of the rising number of Covid-19 cases.
This development is the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ (SBP) response to the mandate made by the Philippines Sports Commission to all national sports associations that “all indoor and outdoor training of all national team members within the affected areas are temporarily suspended.”
The Gilas, which is composed of cadets and varsity studs, had been training since the start of the month for the final window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers and the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers in June. However, with National Capital Region and its neighboring regions being placed in Enhanced Community Quarantine for at least a week, the SBP was forced to indefinitely suspend all training sessions.
“As always, we will remain supportive of the decisions coming from the PSC and will also strictly follow the relevant precautionary measure from the Department of Health and the IATF,” said SBP president Al Panlilio in a statement.
“The timing is unfortunate because our Gilas Pilipinas pool has been putting a lot of work to prepare for FIBA competitions in the coming months. It’s been a difficult stretch for the SBP and the team as Covid-19 has affected so many of our plans but we have no other choice but to adjust and move forward.”
Aside from the men’s national basketball squad, the national boxing and taekwondo teams were also ordered to stop sparring sessions and just do individual drills instead.
Panlilio added that right now, the best course of action for everyone is to just stay at home.
“Right now, we all have to hunker down and stay safe at home. We thank our players, coaches, and staff for soldiering on amidst the difficult situation,” said Panlilio. (JNP)
