THE Gilas Pilipinas Youth ran out of gas down the stretch and got beaten by powerhouse Australia, 109-83, in the 2022 FIBA Under-16 Asian Championship on Friday night at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha.
The Filipino cagers got off to a fast start and even erected a 45-28 lead in the second canto. However, the Aussies came roaring back and took complete control of the lead with a masterful second half performance to get the win and more importantly, earn a slot to the 2022 FIBA Under-17 World Cup in Malaga, Spain.
Bryan Competente led the Gilas Youth 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Caelum Harris produced 14 points, four boards, and four blocks. Cebuano guard Jared Bahay added 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists in the loss.
Alex Konov chipped in 13 points, two boards, and two assists, as Jacob Bayla tallied nine points and three rebounds.
