The Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team will be taking on Thailand twice in the upcoming 2021 FIBA Asia Cup in Manama, Bahrain.
This development came to be after FIBA amended the schedule after South Korea decided to beg off from the competition following concerns regarding Covid-19. This means the Gilas, which is composed of collegiate stars, will take on Thailand on November 27 and again on November 30 at the Khalifa Sport City. Both games will be at 9 p.m. Philippine time.
The tournament’s initial schedule saw the Gilas battle Thailand on November 26 and 30 and Korea on November 28.
Gilas currently has a 1-0 win-loss record in Group A after it crushed Indonesia, 100-70, earlier this year.
This iteration of the Gilas has former two-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Most Valuable Player Rey Anthony Suerte. Gilas interim head coach Jong Uichico took note of Suerte’s skills during their brief training camp.
"We have complete role players in Will Navarro, Javi (Gomez de Liano) is a good spot-up shooter, Rey Suerte and Jaydee (Tungcab) are also good. Actually, lahat talaga sila magagaling," he said during his appearance on the Power and Play with Noli Eala show.
"Lahat naman magaling. Hopefully in time, we can all get these talents to play as one," he added.
Uichico added that exposing these young guns to international competition would immensely help the Gilas program, especially in the run-up towards the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
"If they will be exposed to numerous international competitions, malaki yung magiging development ng mga bata dito," he said. (JNP)
