Ginebra thrashes Meralco to take Game 1 of Philippine Cup semis

THE Barangay Ginebra Kings came out firing on all cylinders and dominated the Meralco Bolts to come away with a lopsided 96-79 victory in Game 1 of the best-of-five semifinals in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Angeles University Foundation Sports Arena in Pampanga.

The Kings ran off to a 48-36 halftime lead, thanks to a 27-19 surge in the second quarter. The third period saw more of the same cohesion and shotmaking from Ginebra as they pushed their lead to 17, 71-54, and brought it to a high of 25 before cruising to the easy win.

Six different players scored in double-figures for the wards of head coach Tim Cone led by the 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals of lead guard Stanley Pringle. Scottie Thompson narrowly missed out on a triple-double as he tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

Arvin Tolentino broke out for 13 markers while LA Tenorio and Aljon Mariano scored 11 apiece. Prince Caperal contributed 10 markers.

Allein Maliksi came off the bench and scored 24 for Meralco. (JNP)
