GMA Undergoing Stem Cell Treatment

MANILA, Philippines - Former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is set to undergo her fourth stem cell intravenous treatment on Monday.

Mrs. Arroyo, who has been in and out of the hospital in the past two years, disclosed the stem cell treatment in her Twitter account.

''This Monday, I will have my fourth stem cell intravenous treatment with my alternative medicine doctor,'' she said.

The former Chief Executive's current alternative medicine doctor is Antonia Park, who owns a wellness center in Tagaytay City.

It can be recalled that after she was allowed to post bail last July, Mrs. Arroyo sought Park's help to address her medical condition.

''It's cultured stem cell and much more modest in price than the one coming from sheep or one's own body,'' she tweeted without divulging how much the treatment will cost.

The former President has started finding a specialist who could treat her problematic spine.

She disclosed that she found at least two alternative medicine practitioners to seek a second opinion, ''while initiating my communication with an opinion with a neurocervical spine purist who does repeat surgery daily,'' as recommended by her cardiologist, Dr. Roberto Anastacio of the Makati Medical Center (MMC).

Mrs. Arroyo also attends her thrice a week therapy at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC), where she was detained for eight months following the electoral sabotage charges hurled against her by a Pasay City court.

Anastacio earlier said Mrs. Arroyo should immediately undergo a surgery to address life-threatening blockage in her neck due to a displaced titanium implant.

He said the treatment is only available in Austria and New York.

Last July, the Sandganbayan issued a hold departure order against Mrs. Arroyo and several other officials of her previous administration following the plunder complaint filed against them over the alleged use of P366-million in intelligence funds, which was remanded by the anti-graft court to the Office of the Ombudsman to give way to her motion for reconsideration.

Minority Leader and Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez has been pressing on the House leadership to do something to ensure that that the ''serious and delicate'' medical condition of the former President would be addressed.

He asked House Speaker Feliciano ''Sonny'' Belmonte Jr. to favorably look at House Resolution 2681, which he filed last August 15, urging for an ''objective consideration'' of Mrs. Arroyo's health condition.

''The issue here is a member of the House who everyone knows suffers from illness. She is in dire need of medical assistance so let us do something about it and come up with a solution,'' he said.

He even proposed that government physicians and Mrs. Arroyo's doctors, including Anastacio, should meet up to determine if there is really a need for her to have her medical treatment abroad.

''A team of government doctors and the doctors of the former President as well as the doctors of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center should sit together to address this. This is one way to address the issue,'' Suarez said.
